Crowns, Stars and Stripes.

As most know, the state crown and sceptre used in Saturday’s coronation contain the largest of the Cullinan Diamonds. It caused no end of social media comments. Some want the diamonds to be giving back and some want the crown to be sold and the money used for social good. Both of those comments require a full discussion.

What it showed, however, was the power of a symbol.

There are many types of power in the world, political, economic, and legal, amongst others. And then there is symbolic power. Arguably could be the most powerful, which now rests on King Charles’ head. The monarchies of the world have little power or at least exercise little power outside of symbolic power.

Culture is shared meaning. We share language and symbols. If you don’t think symbols mean anything, try burning a flag. If you want to control behavior, influence culture. If you want to influence culture, create new symbols and language.

My question is, what are the symbols your family, organization, or tribe uses? Be sure that they are already there, some good and some terrible.

Good leaders, great leaders, know how to design and use symbols.
