It matters.

Good design matters, not only does it need to function but it needs to do so simply and elegantly, in other words, beautifully.

Beauty is part of the function, in fact, “Design is what it does.” Steve Jobs once said. We neglect beauty at our own peril.

Humans have evolved to like beautiful things and handsome people. Our minds prefer symmetry over asymmetry, balance and harmony over distortion and chaos. It most probably has something to do with safety and survival. A beautiful fruit is safer to eat than a misshapen one, and a beautiful partner possibly has stronger genes.

Or do we experience something of the transcendent when we see something beautiful? It is inviting, mysterious and inspiring.

“At least make it beautiful otherwise, it will have no purpose at all” - Oscar Wilde
