Roots and Wings

The university where I studied my first theology degree didn't have a statement of faith, a list of beliefs or dogmas that you have to ascribe to when studying there.

Rather it had a philosophy, to give their students roots and wings.

Roots in their own tradition and wings to explore.

In many social institutions, like the family, modern maxims teach us to give wings, but not roots. And in the corporate world, we often do the opposite, we give roots but clip wings.

It takes wisdom to give both, to hold the tension and paradox between roots and wings.

Just a thought.
