Here is a trick a learned a few years back. It is a technique that is very useful when someone is verbally attacking you, whether in a meeting or in an argument.
When attacked, ask a question.
This does take practice, and a ton of nerve control, but the ability to ask an honest open question can greatly disarm a situation. An honest open question is one that you do not know the answer too and do not think you know the 'right' answer too.
As I said, it takes practice, but instead of defending or retaliating try asking a question next time.
